For a quarter-century, Lockheed's Mach 3 SR-71A Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft dominated the skies like no other aircraft. No reconnaissance aircraft in history has operated in more hostile airspace or with such complete impunity than the SR-71 Blackbird. Originating from the earlier A-12 and YF-12A programs, the SR-71 was designed to fly deep into hostile territory, avoiding interception with its incredible speed and high altitude. It could operate safely at a maximum speed of Mach 3.3 at an altitude more than sixteen miles, or 85,000 ft, above the earth. Affectionately known as Habu by the ground crews and pilots that flew her, the SR-71 was way ahead of its time. The advancements and technologies achieved during the Blackbird's development and deployments placed it at the forefront of aviation technology during its entire lifetime.
